“ I paint to create stillness out of motion; translating what I see and feel as a suspended animation in paint, available for the viewer to interpret, replaying place and emotion, in motion, internally in real time”
Painting both from life and an internal visual archive. Sian is currently cataloguing the states of the sea and shifts in light developed from repetition.
Viewed every morning, meditating on the unbroken horizon is a ritualistic practice, framed perfectly from the studio window.
A compositional decision is made, dividing the sky and sea depending on a particular ratio of interest or dictated by the chosen substrate.
The play between observation, time, slipping in and out of memory and real time, familiarity preempts passing meteorological phenomena, responding, reacting intuitively with an appropriate palette, gesture and emotion.
Routine muscle memory and mark making captures visual information. The pace changes in reflection to the subject and the emotivity of the day.
Exploring the polarities of light, dark, above below, internally and externally both in the studio and En Plein Air.
The placement of one single line— the horizon line — is incredibly important..
